From global sustainability goals to local action

How can Wonderland contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals? For us, it begins with sleep – and the understanding of how essential sleep is to both health and quality of life. That is why we have chosen to focus primarily on the UN goal “Good health and well‑being,” which closely aligns with our vision of contributing to a world that sleeps better. In addition, we also focus on the goals “Responsible consumption and production” and “Climate action.” Together, these three goals form the foundation of our sustainability work.

Sleep that improves life

UN SDG 3: Good health and well‑being

For more than 20 years, Wonderland has worked closely with leading sleep researchers. The goal has always been the same: to understand what happens while we sleep, how the body recovers most effectively – and how we can use this knowledge to develop beds that truly improve your life. This insight forms the foundation of every choice we make in product development – from materials and construction to technical solutions and unique ergonomic features. Our vision is clear: we want to contribute to a world that sleeps better.

Short‑distance and local value chains

UN SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production

We have a strong network of local suppliers closely connected to our daily production. In addition, over 95% of our suppliers produce within Northern Europe. Short‑distance collaboration across our value chain enables us to work side by side at every stage of the process, ensuring premium quality in every detail. Our local commitment makes production more flexible, precise and sustainable, with shorter transport distances, stronger quality control and a value chain built on long‑term partnerships with people and suppliers we know well. The result is beds made with responsibility, expertise and genuine craftsmanship – all with one clear goal: to give you sleep that truly improves your life.

Reduce our environmental footprint

UN SDG 13: Climate action

Together with our suppliers, we actively work to reduce and optimize material use and production processes. We continuously seek new solutions that can reduce our overall environmental footprint.

The WondRest project, launched in 2020, demonstrates that it is possible to reduce the environmental footprint of a bed by 50% – without compromising on either quality or comfort. The insights from WondRest now guide strategic and sustainable decisions across the business. Implementation and further development are already underway and will continue for years to come.

Wonderland Improving Life®

The story of Wonderland

Our journey started in 1969. Surrounded by some of the world’s most striking and rugged mountain peaks, a profound vision took shape – to contribute to a world that sleeps better. This mindset continues to guide us today. Combining local craftsmanship, modern production, short‑travelled value chains and deep knowledge of what the body needs to fully recharge, we create beds designed to give you more out of life.

Why Åndalsnes?

Choosing Åndalsnes, in the middle of Norway, was no coincidence. The region was already a thriving centre for the Norwegian furniture industry, with a growing need for high‑quality foam materials. The combination of industrial expertise and railway infrastructure made Åndalsnes the ideal location for establishing a production facility. Raw materials were efficiently transported by train from Europe – delivered straight into the factory that opened in 1969. Our first mattress, Welun 007, was launched shortly after – a breakthrough that addressed a common problem of the time, when foam mattresses often felt warm, humid and uncomfortable.

Over time, our strong local roots in Åndalsnes have evolved into a unique network of short‑travelled suppliers, creating a robust, efficient and professional production community.

The very first continental bed

Odd Slettaøyen, one of the first employees of Westnofa, played a key role in developing several innovations that shaped both our company and the mattress industry. As early as 1978, Westnofa launched its first mattress with a spring system, and in order to further strengthen its focus on beds and mattresses, the mattress division became Wonderland in 1980. Just three years later, the W1001 spring mattress was launched, and it quickly became a success. This was the first mattress to be sold together with a separate top mattress – something that was regarded as both modern and innovative.

The very first continental bed was introduced by Wonderland in 1988. Once again, it was Odd Slettaøyen who stood behind the innovation, having brought home inspiration from a trade fair on another continent. This led to the development of today’s continental bed, built with multiple layers of mattresses.

Sleep climate, durability and personal comfort

Throughout the 1990s, we deepened our understanding of how sleep climate and a healthy sleep environment affect both sleep quality and the bed’s durability. In 1995, we introduced removable and washable textiles – a popular feature that remains one of Wonderland’s key product characteristics. In 2010, we followed up with our adjustable hip zone, an innovation that continues to be important throughout our collection.

One of the world’s most modern bed factories

Since 2017, Wonderland has been owned by local investors committed to the future and the continued development in Åndalsnes. Today, we operate one of the world’s most modern bed factories, where craftsmanship meets advanced technology through robotic production lines and highly precise automated processes.

Research shaping the bed of the future

For more than 20 years, we have collaborated with leading sleep researchers to understand what truly allows the body to recover and rest. This insight forms the foundation for every decision we make – from materials and construction to technical solutions and unique ergonomic features.

In 2020, we initiated the WondRest project, one of the most significant environmental initiatives in the Norwegian furniture industry. It demonstrates that it is possible to reduce the environmental footprint of a bed by 50% – without compromising on quality or comfort. Insights from WondRest now guide strategic and sustainable decisions across the business. Implementation and further development are already underway and will continue for years to come.

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 – quality and environmental responsibility

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are part of our long‑term commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. These certifications confirm that we work systematically, responsibly, and with continuous improvement throughout every stage of production. This gives you products you can trust – developed with a focus on quality, accountability, and conscious environmental choices.

ISO 9001 – quality in every detail

ISO 9001 confirms that we maintain a systematic and well‑documented quality management approach across the entire production process. This ensures consistent and reliable products, strong routines for control and testing, and continuous improvement in every step of production.

ISO 14001 – a clear environmental commitment

ISO 14001 demonstrates that we take our environmental impact seriously. The standard requires us to work in a structured way to reduce waste, energy consumption, and emissions – and to continuously seek smarter and more sustainable solutions. It also supports us in setting clear environmental targets, monitoring progress, and documenting our results. This allows us to take ongoing steps toward more resource‑efficient and responsible production.

Why ISO matters

ISO certifications are among the world’s most recognized standards for quality and environmental management. For us, they are more than proof of strong routines – they reflect our commitment to working purposefully, transparently, and responsibly. With ISO 9001 and 14001, we ensure clear processes, documented control, and continuous improvement throughout our production. This gives you products you can rely on – and confidence in the choices you make.

Reversible mattresses – lasting comfort, year after year

A mattress should offer the same level of comfort, support, and quality throughout its lifetime. With a reversible design, your mattress stays comfortable for longer and helps your bed maintain its performance year after year.

Why turning your mattress matters

Every night, your mattress is exposed to pressure, moisture, and natural temperature changes. Over time, this can cause uneven wear in the areas where your body rests most often.

By turning the mattress a couple of times a year, you distribute the wear across both sides. This gives the materials time to recover, helping the mattress maintain both support and comfort for longer.

A simple routine that makes a big difference

You can turn our mattresses in any direction: rotate the head and foot ends, or turn them over to the other side. This small, simple routine keeps the materials fresher, more resilient, and more supportive over time – resulting in a more durable and comfortable bed.
